Although digital is at the heart of what we do, we also love to work with editorial content design and have extensive experience in this field.

So when we were asked by our client, Obstacle Race Magazine, for creative support on the refresh of their magazine’s design, we took a running jump at the chance.

The client

Known as the UK’s No.1 magazine for the obstacle race community, Obstacle Race Magazine (ORM) is your one-stop magazine for all-things mud, running and obstacles. From how to choose the right kit, to tips on training for your next event, ORM covers everything runners need.

The brief

We’d worked with ORM on the original design of the magazine, and were more than happy to develop and refresh the magazine’s design and branding. From amending the logo to changing the overall style of the photography, we were briefed in to revitalise the magazine’s original look.

How we helped


ORM wanted to simplify their logo, without losing sight of the original look and feel. To do this, we worked with them to remove the original barbed wire effect, using the same clean, bold font. We also switched the colours around, making the word ‘Obstacle’ yellow, and ‘Race’ white.

From tweaking the borders, to changing the font to Sans Serif, we worked a whole lot of magic on the magazine’s front cover.


ORM wanted the imagery to be lighter and more vibrant, so we worked with them to produce and edit their photography in a way that echoed those sentiments.

Internal pages

When it came to refreshing the content and layout, ORM knew exactly what they wanted. Following the current trends of other similar magazines, they chose to feature Kit Testing pages (where we helped with the photography), icons for each reviewer and a map of all the upcoming racing events.

On top of these key changes, we also helped by including more illustrations, and changing the interior colour scheme to be more primary and secondary, with a neutral balance.

The result?

ORM now have a magazine they’re thoroughly proud of; a piece of journalism that represents and supports the obstacle racing community they’re a part of.
